FREE PEOPLE: SURF

• CALLING ALL WATER BABES •

Yesterday, Free People launched their new ‘movement’ line – ballet, yoga and surf wear. Now, I’m no yogi… or ballerina, but I do fancy myself something of a mermaid and the sporty girly surf /water wear sent my heart a flutter. So perfect for all of our fantasy surfer girl lives, right? All made more magical by being shot in the surf and sand of Costa Rica. All of a sudden I am having serious wanderlust, wanting an exotic surf vacation, having flashbacks to my trip to Costa Rica a couple of summers ago (photo diary part 1 & part 2 here!), and my college year abroad I spent in Cape Town taking surf lessons with my good friend Louis…. Take me back! Check out my favorite styles here below (click on each item to shop!) – don’t forget to pick up yourself a custom painted surf board, we all need one!

WHAT I WORE

THE CLASSIC

denim jacket 001 denim jacker 002 denim jacket 003TopShop Denim Jacket :: Free People ‘Garden Bloom’ Dress :: Acne suede boots :: Rag & Bone clutch :: Ray Ban Aviators

I’m really feelin’ the denim jacket this Spring, you guys. My like for this wardrobe classic goes in and out year over year- however, destructed and boyfriendy with some rolled up sleeves? I’m in right now. I think it was this and then this that started it all (Acne, Acne again…I know I’m not the only one obsessing over these). I finally found one that isn’t a whole month’s rent and here we are – a perfect Spring dress topper, not too preppy or sweet (just the way I like it). So good.

p.s. Spring light? Glorious. I can’t get over how lovely the Spring is here in Philly, especially since I am still having snow storm nightmares. I wan’t these 65-70 degree zero humidity days to last forever! I’ll gladly be stuck in May forever :-)

A NEW MOON

a new moon watercolor

For those of you who felt like last week kind of sucked, you probably are feeling a little bit of a reprieve, for we ushered in a New Moon early yesterday morning. Another powerful occurrence (it’s all happening in April, seriously) – this New Moon, sitting in the house of grounding Earth sign Taurus,  occurred at the same time as a Solar eclipse (which unless you live in Tasmania, you had no chance of seeing), magnifying its powers and effects. The New Moon brings a sense of renewal / new beginnings and at the same time “eclipses can lift us from one stagnant path onto a dynamic new one…” (source). Interesting thing about a New Moon is that they have corresponding Full Moons. The Full Moon in Taurus is November 6th, therefore whatever seeds we sow now, whatever new paths we decide to put ourselves on, we will see the true benefits or fruition of in November.

Taurus is all about sense of security: personal finances, ownerships, physical and material resources, resistance to change, comfort and familiarity – all major themes with this New Moon. The eclipse will help us strengthen all of these. It is a time of recognizing and aligning with what we truly value, and then working to live our lives in a way that truly upholds and reflects it. I personally have been feeling this big time this week. Coming off of a tougher week last week during the Cross, I am now recovering and feeling positive about the future. I have been having intense feelings of wanting to really identify and connect with what I truly want in life – and make the moves toward making it happen. Taurus are naturally great manifesters of their true destinies. This is the time for us to work with this motivating energy to plant the seeds. As I like to say – if not now, when?

AUSTIN PHOTO DIARY PART 1

A week or so ago my SF girlfriends (one of whom now lives in Austin) and I all met up in the great state of Texas for a Spring Break of sorts. Austin is a seriously cool town, and we painted it red, like morning noon and night. I couldn’t get enough – I wanted to move in forever. It must have been the 80 degree dry heat, the serious BBQ and real deal Mexican food (dear God how I miss you…), the many lone star beers, the margaritas, the apartment complex pool, and of course, the company. Sharing with you here some of my photos…

from the Top: daily stops at ‘Juice Land’ were very necessary – found a new favorite smoothie combo – Peachy Green (ie: frozen peaches and greenery) :: BBQ at the Salt Lick & wine tasting & group photo taking at Salt Lick Cellars (conveniently next door) :: Shopping at ‘Feathers’on South Congress (so good) :: a visit to Barton Springs ::

THE GRAND CARDINAL CROSS

elle-eclipse-h-lgn

IT’S ALL HAPPENING. Today, April 23rd, we entered one of the most powerful astrological aspects in years. Mars has moved into perfect 90 degree planetary alignment with Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter (formally the ‘Grand Trine’) forming a cross shape. These planets are sitting in the important Cardinal houses of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, which touch all major aspects of our life. Hence: ‘The Grand Cardinal Cross’. This Cross formation is also coupled with the fact that the timing is right between a lunar (the ‘blood moon’ of 10 days ago) and solar eclipse (April 28th)- all in all a very rare and powerful time. It’s pretty amazing and fascinating and can mean big things, both positive and challenging, for us all. A breakdown below:

The Cross:  Mars vs. Uranus & Pluto vs. Jupiter

Mars which channels warrior energy of aggression and drive is directly opposite Uranus of upheaval and change, both positive and negative. Pluto, of power and control, bringing both destruction and transformation is opposite Jupiter of abundance and optimism.

The Cardinal Signs:  leadership and identity-driven

Aries (Cardinal Fire): The self, the ego, individual concerns

Cancer (Cardinal Water): Home, family, roots, security, the emotional foundation

Libra (Cardinal Air): Relationships, interpersonal matter, mutuality, compromise

Capricorn (Cardinal Earth): Work, career, public life & image

So what does this all mean? It’s all pretty intricate and complicated but in general what it means is that there is a lot of internal push and external pull working on us all at once. These are very dynamic forces pulling us all in opposing directions, stretching us between many important situations. It can feel like a very frustrating and challenging time… but the thing about this aspect is that if you are able to work through it and keep an eye on your intentions and goals, you can actually create strong positive momentum for yourself and come through the other side with positive growth and rebirth. This is actually what I love about this cosmic time – and why I think it is important to know about, understand and be conscious of it all. There is a tremendous opportunity for us to really harness these forceful energies to bring on personal growth and push ourselves forward. Quoting here the Cosmic Queen (who runs a pretty awesome astrology blog) –

“It can feel like you are in a tug of war, torn between different versions of who you are, how you want to live your life, yet trying to deal with the curve balls life is throwing at you. These curve balls challenge your beliefs and desires as you may feel you have limited options. However the magic here is in realizing the opportunity to integrate the energy of both polarities. This is mega powerful energy that you can draw upon to completely change your life….This dynamic and urgent energy brings opportunities for profound growth…this is an exciting time to reinvent ourselves, and see exactly what we’re capable of.”

From AstroStyle:  “The rising energy will be impossible to ignore, and it can force us into action, ready or not. But breaking points are also turning points, and this is the hidden gift of a Grand Cross.”

There is a good technical (ie: serious diagram) explanation by astrologer Donna Page here –it is worth a view. While a lot of people describe these energies as “difficult” to manage through, she also stresses the importance this being an opportunity for transformation through purging of emotional baggage – that we need to honor all of these elements that appear to be at conflicting crossroads with each other, and find balance, peace and harmony within ourselves during this time.

I also love Donna’s comment about the point of astrology in general – that it is about connecting to what is going on and having a consciousness and awareness around using these energies to evolve and create the life we want for ourselves.

I am both interested and excited to see what the next 4 or 5 days (until the solar eclipse) bring for me, as I’ve already started to feel the effects. I’m keeping in a positive head space and looking for the opportunities for myself. I’ll keep you posted on how it’s going…

Reading I recommend for digging in deeper and learning more about what this time means specifically for you (considering your astrological and rising signs)  here, here and here (these are also my favorite resources for daily astrology updates)

“You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope.“
